Woman sentenced in drunken breastfeeding caseAug 7 2009 12:29PM
Associated Press Grand Forks, N.D. (AP) A woman accused of breast-feeding her 6-week-old baby while drunk has been ordered to get treatment that could help her avoid jail. Stacey Anvarinia of Grand Forks pleaded guilty to a child neglect charge in June. She told Judge Sonja Clapp at her sentencing Friday that she knew what she did was wrong and said, "I am working hard and continue to work to get my daughter back." The unusual case grabbed international attention and stirred debate about breast-feeding, alcohol and privacy. The judge said Friday that the key issue was the overall care of the baby. Clapp sentenced Anvarinia to 18 months in jail but suspended all but six months and said Anvarinia could get credit for chemical dependency treatment. After an evaluation, she is to report to authorities Aug. 31 to determine whether she can serve her sentence at home with electronic monitoring. She will be on probation for three years.
