KXMBTV Bismarck But getting information pre-internet... was a whole different story. Our Amber Schatz shows us how students are getting a lesson from the past. Dating back to the 1880s... these machines used to be the source of information for the masses.. ( "Would somebody like to print?") But in a different age of technology, they serve more as a history lesson for students (Linda Kelsch/Linton teacher) "This shows them what effort goes into creating some of the newspapers and books we have today." 3rd and 4th graders from Linton and Hazelton field trip to the Braddock threshing grounds every year as a way to experience the past There's a lot to be said for big schools but there's a closeness with smaller schools." (Sandra Baumgartner/Hazelton teacher) "I hope they remember what it took for our schools to become what they are today and how they started." Their teachers... Two sisters who grew up in these parts and lived some of the experiences kids are trying out just for the day (Parker Gerving/3rd grader) "We go to old schoolhouse, look at tractors." (Lance Weiser/4th grader) "They didn't have cars, big houses, big towns, they just maybe had 2 houses in one area." (Kelly Glovich/4th grade) "It's fun because you get to see the old machines and get to try printing it, it's like you're a printer for a day." One of the biggest culture shocks for kids, comprehending a world before the internet ((Kelly Glovich/4th grader) "These you have to do it by hand and on the computer you just have to push a button and click." (Kelsch ) "Now you go on computer, you type it up, shows you where errors are, you correct them, and you print it." While the show and tell helps kids appreciate how the newspaper used to get made.. Parker Gerving/3rd grade) "You roll the big thing over it." (Lance Weiser/4th grade) "Back in the old times this is what they did instead of type on something." Some say, they prefer the tools of today.. (Kelly Glovich) "Now we have technology to do stuff for us instead of doing it by hand." Amber Schatz, KX News. The students also churned butter... and ate it... They also toured an old schoolhouse, post office, and depot.
