Fighting Sioux Nickname and LogoSep 28 2009 10:59PM
KXMBTV Bismarck Reporter Amber Schatz travels to the one place where approval is still needed to keep "Fighting Sioux" at the university... It's the nickname and logo being debated around the country.. Will UND stay the "Fighting Sioux"? And should they? (Deleena Painte) "I'm all for it, being somebody who has actually been there." (Dana Yellow Fat) "Once I got to UND and saw how they portrayed us there, it just wasn't for me." Two former UND students with very different opinions... take a stand for and against the issue And that divide is evident all around the Standing Rock Sioux reservation... Where final approval is needed to keep the logo we showed to people at random around town (Amber Schatz/Reporting) "Reaction to our Fighting Sioux jersys here in Fort Yates is much like the controversy itself, some people we approached felt offended, others were full of pride." (Deleena Painte) "Sioux crew, couple sweaters." Deleena Painte says she has her own Fighting Sioux memorabilia... and would be the first in line to sign up for a vote to keep "Fighting Sioux" at UND (Painte) "I went to the Football games, the Hockey games, all of them, and they were so respectful... Nobody would use derogatory at all, I actually felt really proud, so I'm all for it." "If I had this right now, I'd put it on." (Rebecca Marshall) "I'm happy they're still trying to keep the logo, they should." (Reporter asking "When you look at it, tell me what you see" (Darla Sadler) "Pride, proudful, Native Americans used to be known as Indians, this says Sioux, this is a nation." Just as passionate... the opposing view.. (Dana Yellow Fat) "The overt racism I can deal with, it's everything underlying, we're honoring you, but I don't feel honored by it." (Dustin Shot With Two Arrows) "To me, it don't have anything to do with being an Indian, I think this is what hurts people, the word Sioux." (Phyllis Young) "On behalf of my children, I'm looking for positive change... 36:05 "the logo represents to me a hostile environment." As for what the majority of tribal members believe... We may never know for sure (Ron His Horse Is Thunder/Tribal Chairman) "There have been some tribal members who want to vote on the issue, but the tribal council, they go out and listen to their constituents and so more of tribal council believe that most constituents don't want to." His Horse Is Thunder says the tribal council decided 9 to 3 to not have a vote (Painte) "I think it should be approved... "I think a lot of people are interested but don't want to do anything." (Yellow Fat) "Our leaders have spoken and they say no, we're not going to vote on it, it's not an issue we need to take up, it's an issue we need to let die, and let them move on with it." (Marshall) "Our chairman should vote for it, and have us all vote too on Standing Rock, a lot of us agree." (Young) "It's not just Standing Rock, it's Rosebud, all Lakota-Sioux tribes in ND, SD, Canada are opposed to it, so we have a consensus and that was built ten years ago." (Darla Sadler) "I hope they will have a vote, it's our right to vote yes or no." And so the debate continues... from this picture... to the bigger picture (Shot With Two Arrows) "If it was something different it wouldn't hurt the Indian people, but we live in a society today where they say there is no racism and we believe that, but there is." (Darla Sadler) "It's not a slur, not racism, I'm a civil rights activist worker and I love it when Native Americans are recognized." In Fort Yates... Amber Schatz/KX News. As of right now, October first is the deadline to gain Sioux tribal approval... which has happened at Spirit Lake, but not Standing Rock. However, the Higher Board of education is holding a meeting on Thursday to discuss whether they should extend the deadline.
