Ethanol Blend

Is 10 percent in your tank enough or should there be more? The Environmental Protection Agency was expected to rule this week on a petition to increase the limit of ethanol blends from ten to 15 percent. EPA has now decided to post pone that decision till the middle of next year.

Jeff Zueger is the Manager for Blue Flint Ethanol in Underwood.

Zueger says he doesn't expect an increase from E10 to E15 to have an immediate effect on a production facility, but he says it would help grow the market place for renewable fuels.

He says it could possibly allow for a potential 15 to 17 million more gallons to stay in the state instead of getting loaded on a rail car and moved.

(Jeff Zueger / General Manager) "I think it creates a home for those gallons because the market is in a blalnace where prudction keeps pace with demand. we have a strong standard set infront of us for 36 billion gallons of renewable fuel by 2022. And we need to start to create avenues in the market for those fuels to flow into and this kinda does that. So as you bring on cellulosic or additional ethanol there is a home for those gallons and a market for those gallons."

The EPA said that more testing was necessary.

But the agency did say that some of the initial results indicate that increasing the amount of ethanol blended into gasoline would be feasible for newer cars. watch the video | save this article / add to your favorites list
