Calving weather alert

When does cold become too cold for your little ones? That's one question the National Weather Service is answering.

Cold Advisory for Newborn Livestock is a new service to help ranchers reduce livestock losses due to weather. The online system is available from mid-January through the end of May. John Paul Martin with the National Weather Service says it is updated twice a day.

Martin says it's a link producers should visit often because the information is always changing.

(John Paul Martin / National Weather Service) "Temperature, humidity, wind speed, is it raining or snowing outside, is it precipitating? Or is it sunny ouside? It takes all those parameters into account and comes up with one category for the risk for new born livestock. There are actually six levels of risk, no advisory at all which would mean even the most at risk, vulnerable, newborn livestock would have any hazard directly related to weather and it goes all the way up to extreme."

The cold advisory for newborn livestock can be found by clicking on the "other useful links" on the National Weather Service's home page.
