Dickinson Time ChangeJul 16 2009 11:00PM
KXMBTV Bismarck The time divide in the western part of the state has been an issue for many people for a long time. Brad Feldman looks into the latest effort to move time ahead just one hour. Halfway through lunch hour...and time is already wasting (Terri Thiel/ Dickinson CVB) "We are losing four hours in a work day, everyday." Some business people in Dickinson struggle with the time change It's the reason Dickinson City Commissioner Shirley Dukart took on the issue of changing the entire county from Mountain Time to Central Time (Shirley Dukart/ Dickinson City Commissioner) "We have come a long ways in Stark County and Southwestern North Dakota that I think we need to do this as soon as possible just to be compatible and be more effective and enhance our business and competition here." The response is mixed Dukart says right now it's about sixty-forty in favor of the move A recent poll taken by the Dickinson Chamber of Commerce got 89 responses... fifty-two people are in favor of the change...thirty-seven want to stay right where they are (Shirley Dukart/ Dickinson City Commissioner) "If we dont change our direction then we are going to end up where we are headed and that is not the way to go." Dukart says moving to central time would be a benefit to local government, businesses, heathcare, recreation and education However, some people, including Dickinson's Mayor Dennis Johnson say it's not a big issue (Dennis Johnson/ Dickinson Mayor) "A few years ago before all the technology we have with the internet and cellphones I would have been very much in favor of changing to central time. But now with technology the way it is it has kind of made time zones a little more irrelevant." In the end, after all the arguments are made...the final vote will be made by the twenty-three thousand people who live in the county.. City Commissioner Dukart says her hope is to put it on the ballot next June...to see if the time is right to make the change In Dickinson Brad Feldman KX News Stark County is just one of the counties considering a time zone change. Mercer County and Billings County Commissioners have been discussing the idea as well.
