9-11 Pentagon Survivor Runs for Therapy

Six years ago today, America was attacked by terrorists an attack that killed nearly three thousand people in a single day.

Most of us can remember where we were when we heard the news.

Tech Sergeant Mike Carswell of the Minot Air Force Base certainly can it changed his life dramatically.

But you might be surprised to learn what that attack has led him to...

(Jim Olson, KX News) Mike Carswell loves to run.

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "On a slow week I only run 30 or 40 miles."

(Jim Olson, KX News) He likes to run a lot.

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "I got up one morning a few months ago and just ran 30 miles."

(Jim Olson, KX News) His love of running

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "I don't do anything halfway."

(Jim Olson, KX News) began about two years ago

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "Running two or three miles, three days a week turned into five or six miles a day, seven days a week. Next thing you know I'm planning on running my first marathon last September."

(Jim Olson, KX News) Now, he's getting ready for the Roughrider Marathon in Bismarck this weekend

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "3-and-a-half to 4-and-a-half hours, somewhere in there. I'm out there to have fun. Just enjoying life really."

(Jim Olson, KX News) And that's the key in Mike's running - enjoying life

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "It's who I've become. It's such a big part of me."

(Jim Olson, KX News) Because until he took up running two years ago, he was paralyzed...mentally paralyzed

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "Diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, depression, just the gamut."

(Jim Olson, KX News) Because of what he experienced six years ago today.

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "Like so many Americans, I watched that morning in horor what was happening on TV. I had this little thought that, man if they wanted to hit a military installation, we're in the perfect spot. And it wasn't 15, 20 minutes later there was a huge explosion."

(Jim Olson, KX News) You see, Mike was in the Pentagon when it became a terrorist target on September 11th, 2001.

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "I walked out into the hallway and you could smell it almost immediately. We're halfway around the building but you could smell jst fuel almost immediately. Within just a few weeks I was already experiencing nightmares. The fear of flying just gripped me. A plane flying overhead, I give myself whiplash looking up at the plane."

(Jim Olson, KX News) An unusual phenomenon for an Air Force sergeant

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "For me being afraid to fly is like a Nascar driver being afraid to drive on the interstate."

(Jim Olson, KX News) Finally, counselors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center recommended Mike take up exercise to help rid himself of his demons. And he's been running ever since.

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "It's made life worth living again for me."

(Pam Carswell, Mike's Wife) "When those memories come back, he can run."

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "If it wasn't for my wife I wouldn't be here today, I don't doubt that. She pulled me through."

(Jim Olson, KX News) And now, the running - and the birth of their daughter, has taken some of that load off Mike's wife Pam.

(Pam Carswell, Mike's Wife) "He's happy. He's easy to live with. When something goes wrong, it isn't a catastrophe."

(Jim Olson, KX News) Terrorists killed almost three thousand Americans on 9-11, but there were many other victims too

(Pam Carswell, Mike's Wife) "9-11 I think really took away his idea of what tomorrow is because tomorrow could be worse than today."

(Jim Olson, KX News) But Mike has beaten his depression and PTSD by putting one foot in front of the other

(Mike Carswell, MAFB) "I'm alive. And when I'm running, I'm never more alive."

Jim Olson, KX News.

Mike has set a goal of running 184 marathons over the rest of his life - one for each of the persons killed in the attack on the Pentagon.

So far, he's run 18 toward that goal. watch the video | save this article / add to your favorites list

Posted by EB on Sep 11 2007 8:09PM - I have never heard such a bunch of baloney in all my life!! Let me get this straight-this guy was on the OTHER side of the Pentagon from where the plane hit, wasn't injured in ANY way, smelled the jet fuel, and as a result of that, he has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder??? I can't believe my ears!!! If you follow this logic, then pretty much everyone in lower Manhattan on 9/11 who saw the planes hit the towers, weren't hurt, but smelled the jet fuel ALL must have PTSD? This guy needs to get a life, and get a grip.

Posted by what gives on Sep 12 2007 1:23PM - EB - I think you missed the big picture here. You can get PTSD from anything that caused stress in your life. That day was very stressful. Yes, there are very many people that have PTSD in Manhattan, and are still being treated for it today. Maybe there is a story about one of them in a NY paper or news channel. Maybe you should sit down with him and get a view of his life, see what he really went through before you are so quick to judge.

Posted by EB on Sep 12 2007 6:07PM - What Gives-I think YOU missed the point. I am very familiar with PTSD. And yes, that day was very stressful for EVERYONE IN THIS COUNTRY. I have no doubt that there are many in Manhattan who have received treatment for PTSD as a result of 9/11. But as a person who comes from a long military family history, I have trouble understanding how this guy, who is in the military which entails risk and danger as part of the job, and who, as he stated, was on the other side of Pentagon from the crash, and wasn't physically injured in any way, should have such a problem just from smelling jet fuel. I don't know how he manages to spend anytime on an Air Force base, where the odor of jet fuel is almost impossible to avoid. Believe me-I've spent half my life on Air Force bases all over the world. What is this guy going to do if gets orders for Iraq or Afghanistan, where he would literally be under the gun? Say he can't go because he has trouble with planes and the smell of jet fuel? I said it before-he needs to get a grip. Maybe he should look for another career.

Posted by Pam Carswell on Sep 20 2007 12:45PM - EB and What Gives. You have no clear idea how you personally will react until someting like that happens to you. Losing friends and co-workers in a national tragedy I something I hope you will never go through. However, you have no right to judge anyone else until it has happened to you and maybe you'll hold it together for a while, Mike did, for a while but sooner or later you have to deal with the aftermath. Survivor's guilt is a real pain people experience. It is the mark of a truly decent human being. Mike has found a wholesome and healthful way to deal with it and I know he'd be fine in any fire fights that came his way anywhere. Later, he may struggle but I wouldn't have it any other way. You see, he's a decent man. Maybe you could learn something.

Posted by Bobbie Stephens on Nov 10 2007 10:04PM - EB- first and foremost let me tell you, if you were raised from a long military family background and you can not understand why Mike has PTSD than obviously you are uneducated about the disorder. Being you came from that background it does not take a rocket scientist to understand what these wonderful men and women do for our country. You said what would Mike do if he ever was ordered to go to Iraq or Afghanistan, where he would be under the gun. Well let me tell you my friend you need to thank him and all the other military personal for their services, and their dedication to keep us all free. (especially the negative people such as yourself). With that being said, Mike Carswell is courageous, and dedicated to his country. He is also my wonderful brother. Being from the background that you come from does not make you educated about PTSD. When you experience it than you can have your say so. Oh, by the way are you a doctor, do you have a PHD? If you came from that kind of family history than you should know what PTSD is about. You need to do your homework on PTSD. And in the mean time you need to thank all these wonderful men and women that serve our country. Would you serve our country with the dedication and courage as these men and women have? Than why didn't you? In closing may god bless you and your family.
