KXMBTV Bismarck The RoughRider Honor Flight took the veterans to Washington DC to tour many monuments...including the World War Two Memorial. On the trip, most of the stories had to do with attacks on the ground by sea or the air. Brad Feldman shows you one veteran with a little different perspective. (Dorothy Pence) "We'll I have changed quite a bit since then...especially now.." Dorothy Pence served her country (Dorothy Pence) "Of course when I went in it was new for women." She didn't wear body armor...carry a gun or head to the front lines During World War Two, women in the military were held back and served in the military hospitals or did work in support of the men who did the fighting (Dorothy Pence) "In my case and in many others it was an out to get away. I didn't want to teach school and I had the background for physical therapy so I went into that." Her job take care of the service men who were injured in battle... it's a job she remembers as she tours the Women's Service Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery (Dorothy Pence) "that is the uniform I would have worn." Her caring touch for service members didn't end when she left the service. (Dorothy Pence) "I started playing the bugle and playing taps 20 years ago in Minot." (Sound - taps) Pence has honored fallen soldeirs through the years by playing the most recognized honor hymn.. (sound - taps) (Dorothy Pence) "I was up to 963 playing taps. I was hoping to hit a thousand." (Sound- taps) Pence has given herself a new mission...but unexpectedly, her tune has gone silent (Dorothy Pence) "So I have been doing it but about six months ago I was hit with Leukemia so I had to quit." Pence's goal now is to take care of herself...this after years of putting other people first.. (sound - taps) But she cant help but enjoy the sound of honor (sound - taps) A sound she has played for so many ... and one day will get the chance to play again IN Washington DC Brad Feldman KX News Pence was presented with a plaque in honor of her service during her visit to the Women's Service Memorial.
