Corn Maze Opens to VisitorsOct 2 2006 8:12PM
KXMCTV Minot The Rocky Acres 4-H chapter has carved out a maze in the middle of a Corn field near Max. Shaun Sipma was there and has the story. (Shaun Sipma, KX News) It may seem easy enough at first. You pick your path and make your way through the maze. But once you get in...it's a whole other story. (Brittney Klein, VP Rocky Acre 4H Club) "It is very deceiving because you see where other people's heads are and you're like, 'oh I can get over there,' but then you end up taking the wrong turn and you're totally going the wrong direction." The corn maze north of Max is creating quite the stir...drawing in kids of all ages to see if they can weave their way from one end to the other without getting completely lost inside. (Daryle Lies, Rocky Acre 4H Advisor) "If you take the wrong turns you can go over a mile in this maze. If you take the right turns you can go over a half mile to get through it." The idea of a corn carved labyrinth was actually born a few years back as advisors and 4Hers were looking for a fun fall project that would involve the community. (Daryle Lies) "And the one group of parents that threw it around was the family that runs Scheresky Ag Service and was kind enough to put the corn in for us." They had the idea and a corn field...all they needed was a design. (Daryle Lies) "Well it's what the Rocky Acres presents the clover leaf corn maze and it is a cloverleaf and in the middle of it is the 4H insignia. And then it's got off-trails going between the leaves, between the 4H." (Chelsy Lies - Pres., Rocky Mountain 4H) "We had to measure the corn at full length so we had to see the other people and place all these little flags down on the ground. We had to go through each and every row throwing out the corn shucks." (Klein) "It was a lot of work and planning but as actual work we were able to do it in a couple of weeks." To take their project one step further, the group also wanted to include a little bit of learning amidst the maze. (Daryle Lies) "Within the corn maze there is educational facts in there of North Dakota Agriculture." (Klein) "And then there's a quiz with prizes at the end." And what would be better than being able to navigate the cloverleaf corn maze? How about being able to get some hands on experience with a few farm critters. (Daryle Lies) "We have pumpkin sales going on we have a petting zoo." (Klein) "Here's thumper." So If you're looking to get lost for an afternoon, this certainly is the place to be. North of Max, Shaun Sipma KX News. The corn maze is open Sundays in October from noon to six and Saturday October 28th for a special haunted Halloween maze.
