Get Ready for School

While a visit to your physician or public health clinic has long been needed to update Immunizations for children entering kindergarten, adolescents entering middle school will need to do the same before school starts this fall.

Effective the 2008 ? 2009 school year, children attending North Dakota schools must receive a second dose of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine before being admitted to kindergarten. This is in addition to the previously required DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), Polio, and MMR (measles, mumps, rubella).

Before entry into middle school, a student must receive Meningococcal and Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccine. These new requirements are in addition to the previously required immunizations.

Meningococcal disease (including meningitis) is an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This potentially fatal disease strikes quickly and, even with treatment, can leave the individual with life-long disabilities. Studies have shown that the risk of getting meningitis increases in teens and young adults.

Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is the only vaccine-preventable disease that is on the rise. The immunity provided by our vaccination as infants has disappeared. Tdap is recommended for all adolescents and adults as well, when they are due for their next tetanus update.

Gardasil (HPV vaccine) is recommended for 11-12 year old girls. It is also recommended for young women through age 26 who have not yet received the vaccine series. | save this article / add to your favorites list

Posted by MUSAorg on Jul 4 2008 3:45PM - The Meningitis Foundation of America (MFA), a national organization, would like the public and media to know that information is available regarding the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of meningitis. MFA was founded by parents whose children were affected by meningitis. In addition to supporting vaccines and other means of preventing meningitis, the MFA provides information to educate the public and medical professionals so that the early diagnosis, treatment and, most important, prevention of meningitis, will save lives. Meningitis is a dangerous and sometimes fatal inflammation of the brain and/or spinal cord that can leave survivors with serious life-long physical problems such as deafness, brain damage and other disabilities, meningitis can sometimes result in loss of limbs. MFA would like to be considered as a news resource for the disease. If you would like to arrange an interview please call Jamie Callahan, General Manager of the MFA. For further information, visit the MFA website at www.musa.org.

MFA is proud to announce the new C.I.S.S. Container Identification Scratch System
When we participate in sporting events or mingle at social gatherings it is possible to lose track of our water bottles and/or beverage cans, especially those served in containers that are very similar or identical to a container from which you are drinking. This carries the risk of transmitting an illness, such as meningitis or the common cold or flu. The Container Identification Scratch System, or C.I.S.S., is a fun way to make sure you always know your drink from others. Use it at sporting events or at a family gatherings and reduce the waste from forgotten drinks. Simply scratch your number from the C.I.S.S. label and identify your drink. For more information please contact Bob Gold at Ciss.bob@gmail.com
