Flapps

You said in that other thread that you were diabetic? My mother was a diabetic, but didn't take care of herself. She lived on carbs, especially mashed potatoes, corn, peas and bread, plus she smoked Pall Malls and drank hard liquor. I've heard that both cigs and booze are bad for diabetics? The diabetes is what killed her just a few years ago. She was in a diabetic coma 3 times and we almost lost her each time. Then she hurt herself and was in so much pain that they had to put her on morphine in the hospital. She was out of it all the time, so didn't eat...and you know what happens from there. I have no idea why she didn't take the diabetes seriously. Do you take good care of yourself and watch what you eat? I think you said you watched your carbs? So that means you're pretty much on a high protein diet? Are you on the pills or insulin... Do you get out and walk alot? I've heard that exercise is really important for diabetics.

I wish I would have known more about diabetes when mom was still alive, maybe then I could have stepped in and done something for her. I didn't learn much about it until one of my dogs got diabetes and now he's on a high protein diet and gets insulin twice a day. I had to learn all about the condition real fast! Having the little meter here,  I've tested myself in the morning before eating and was a 95. I hope I don't ever get it, but if I do, I'll be taking better care of myself than my mother did.

When were you diagnosed?

Marilyn, Mother has been diabetic for years.  She is 93 and sharp as a tack, non-drinker and non-smoker (except for a little mj).  Takes good care of herself and is a "true" liberal.

Joe's mom sounds like she has it together and a kewl lady.  I'll bet she can hold her own driving her way around an obsticle course My hat is off to a lady like that.

One of my best friends was diabetic, but he failed to stop drinking.  One day his eye sight shattered like a pain of glass, and each segment started to darken.  He we blind and became the president of the Blind Assoc. of North Dakotat and ran a summer camp for blind people.  He was giving a speach at the Bismarck Civic Auditorium and when he fiinished he handed the microphone over and droped dead at the age of 39.  I like to think he showed me something in human characture and ones desire to never give up and and to never fear death enough not to enjoy yourself while you are here.

Larry Johnson may he RIP.

My sister Debbie got diabetes when she was pregnant with the last child,  17 yrs ago.   Drs say it was the pregnancy.   She works at a drs office and takes care of herself.

But we all worry .  She is beautiful and fun loving, we all hope the best for her.   She had to go back for a second eye exam this week and she feels the dr. is hiding something... so  lets pray she doesn't have an eye problem, with diabetes that is always a worry.

Joe, your mom sounds like a lot of fun.

I was diagnosed about 15 years with diabetes.  At first I thought it wasn't a big deal back then, take a pill or two and continue on in my old life style, slopping up beer, pizza, etc.  At that time I was told to watch my fat intake, now we know its carbs.  This disease sneaks up on you and you can inherit it., my Dad has it also.  Millions of people have it and don't know it, and when they find out that they have it, it might be so advanced you have to take insulin immediately.  In a way I was lucky because when I found out 15 years ago I watched what I ate, walked more and took care of myself., I started with the needle this year, one shot a day at night.  My eye sight is excellent, my weight is very good and I will smoke once or twice a week [tobacco] and have some drinks occassionaly.  If you are overweight, like to eat the wrong things, watch out!, you are a candidate for this.  Blood sugar reading of 95 after fasting is excellent, mine was 114 this morning.  Sooner or later something will get us all, hopefully it won't be diabetes.

I have a problem with low blood sugar.. it was at a 62 when I was tested. They didnt say it WAS diabetes but i am starting to follow the diets. (I am FINALLY going to see a nutritionist on Tuesday. I notice when it gets above 125 or below 85, my body goes haywire.  Im not obese but rather underweight for my height n age. Its hard to get used to!

SG, gestational diabetes is rather common and usually goes away. How long has it been since she got it?

Joe, when did your mom get diabetes? It's a scary disease. I can't believe she's that old and a diabetic. Bravo to your mom!

Flapps, sounds like you're on the right track. I don't eat pasta and breads, but I do have a problem with sweets, dark chocolate in particular, which is lower in sugar then milk chocolate. I do make sure I only buy sugar-free products such as yogurt, jello, pudding, etc.. and I also take moderate amounts of supplements. I don't drink pop, just water and occasionally coffee. I hope I don't get it. I don't want it.

I remember that mom's worst time of day was about 4am... What's with that? I remember when I stayed with her once that about 4am I heard a noise so got up. Here she was sitting in the hallway in her jammies. She didn't want to get up. She said, "Just leave me here and get me something to eat". I know she told me exactly what to get her, but I don't remember what it was now. I got it for her, propped her up with a pillow and waited for her to say to get her up. I wish she would have taken better care of herself. She was so cute and so much fun to be around. What a sense of humor...but you know what...she danced all the way to her grave. Just too soon...

KX, that guy was way too young. I remember when I worked at the Cando hospital one winter many years ago, we had a 21 year old kid come in that was really sick with his diabetes. He had already lost his eyesight. Sounds to me now, looking back, that he didn't do the right things when he was at home?

Flapps, you continue to take good care of yourself, sounds like you're doing good so far and Joe, I hope you get tested on and off so that you can nip it in the bud if you start showing signs of it. I know I'm keeping tabs on myself. Just talking to you guys reminds me how important it is to be aware of how I'm living on a daily basis.

Joe, I don't think I've really bad-mouthed him...I just don't agree with some of what he's doing. Did she really lose a leg....to diabetes?
Posted On: Nov 6 2009 4:27PM

Marilyn,   its been 18 yrs for Debbie.   Shots each day.   No one else in the family has it, and we have a big family.

Debbie has excellent weight and does walk each day.  So you say it may go away?

If it's gestational diabetes, it goes away shortly after giving birth. Sounds like she has it for life. I hope she eats alot of REAL food and not processed stuff. Like Flapps said, you have to watch what you eat....then the problem doesn't get as bad as it could.

Yes Marilyn and most of her toes.

Sorry about that Joe.   Hope she is doing well otherwise.

I'm really sorry to hear about that too.... but my gosh, she's in her 90's! That's an accomplishment in itself. Maybe you inherited her longevity. When did she lose her leg? Does she live on her own? My mother spent the past few years of her life in a home. Due to her not taking care of herself all her life, she was a brittle diabetic and had osteoporosis so bad that if somebody hugged her, they'd break a rib.

She lost the leg and toes about 15 years ago and almost lost the other last summer.  She lives on our family farm with my brother and has long "vacations" with me.  She is a retired RN and is training her sons how to care for a diabetic.  Yes it is amazing and thank God for Medicare.
