A 34-year-old civilian police officer who grew up in Carolina Beach and is described as “Mighty Mouse” and a “little dynamo” by former colleagues has been surrounded by national media since it was revealed that she was credited with stopping last week's deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood. Sgt. Kimberly Munley is recovering from a gunshot wound at Metroplex Health System in Killeen, Texas, where she had a second surgery Saturday morning, according to a statement from the hospital. She is listed in good condition.
Munley, who officials say shot suspected gunman Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan four times in last week's attack, will appear in an exclusive interview on Wednesday's “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” according to the show's Web site and previews.
Munley graduated in 1993 from Hoggard High School, attended Cape Fear Community College's Basic Law Enforcement program and first worked as a police officer for the Wrightsville Beach Police Department.
She grew up in Carolina Beach, where her father Dennis Barbour owns a hardware store and is the former mayor of the island town. Her father is in Texas with Munley, staff at the hardware store said Tuesday.
The hospital released a statement Saturday extending the family's appreciation for the many concerns and thoughts surrounding Munley.
“They are deeply touched by the outpouring of strength, thoughts and prayers that have been sent their way,” the statement said. “At this time, the main concern for Kim's family is her safe and rapid recovery.”
The statement also adds the family's condolences to all those affected by the shootings at Fort Hood, where 13 people died and several more were injured.
“Mrs. Munley is very concerned with the well-being and safety of all involved and is hopeful that all injured will make a speedy recovery,” the statement said.
Munley joined the police force at Fort Hood in January 2008 after spending several years in the Army, according to an article in The New York Times. Munley and her husband Matthew Munley are in the process of selling their house and moving back to North Carolina, where Matthew Munley has been assigned to Fort Bragg, the article said. |

She was doing what she was trained to do, hero maybe. Sometimes the military when things like the shooting happen, they like to put one person out to do some positive PR. There were many other heroes that day that are quiet. In the military it is our responsibility to help others were possible, and to help get others out of harm’s way.

Even as a civilian she was just doing her job.

She was a civilian cop, off duty, must have had a scanner with her, and she turned around and went to the scene, no kevlar. Yes, COURAGE abounds in that little package! I would imagine they are Skyping the interview. Shoppe, lay down your weapon and watch it!

You won't see her in a hospital bed on another channel I bet. I don't watch Oprah anymore either...she's not much fun, and it has nothing to do with her supporting Obama. I just don't like the show anymore, the majority of the subject matter is boring or a turn-off..the Eckert Tolle carp, etc.... I'm watching the OFFICER today, not Oprah. I'm anxious to hear her speak...

If John McCain was going to be on Oprah, would you watch?

Nope shoppe is very adamant about Oprah...her and I have had conversations about her months ago. Palin was/is(?) on Oprah and she still won't watch.
Hero? No. She was doing her job, by the way ,she was trained to do. Now if say shoppe happened to be there and drew her weapon, running towards gunfire and taking out the bad guy...untrained and not paid to do it...then she would be a hero. I think the word hero is way overused.
What bugs me more is the fact that media keeps calling her the female officer, female, girl, woman, female, girl, woman, over and over....give it up already. She is a COP, who happens to be a female....who did her job. or they refer to her as the hero who only thought about helping and not of her baby at home.....give it a break!!!! She was doing her job...off duty or not...she was doing her job, a job that she TRAINED to do. A job she choose. If I were her I would be highly upset of the coverage and ask the media to let it go and use the time to cover the families....or dig for the truth....

I call her a HERO because she was off-duty at the time on the way to a car repair shop. She could have kept driving...she didn't. She turned around and risked her life. No vest on.

I wanted to clarify that I'm not elevating her to a god-like status by starting this thread on her. I also know that soldiers are just doing their jobs, but they are also my heroes. Cops, soldiers, fireman, EMT's, Paramedics, all heroes in my book because they save lives and some put their own lives on the line to save others. A job yes, but it takes a special kind of person to do it. Not your average Joe. Care, you worked in the penal system, I think you know what I'm trying to say here.

Care, my my my, you sure pay attention.
Yes, I wouldn't watch if mccain were on.. :) Nor, Palin... I have to stick by my belief that oprah is a boring lib. When she fawned over obama (before elected) and fawns over so many libs, yet wouldn't let Palin on her show!!! that did it for me.
I will stick by my guns (pun)
