Until now, a hunter who, for one reason or another, found himself wheelchair bound for any length of time would have to give up hunting.
But a Bismarck man is changing that.
Tom Martell had to have his left leg amputated.
While he has been able to live a fairly normal life with the help of a prosthesis, he wasn't able to hunt for the length of time he did before.
So with the help of a friend he converted this wheelchair into an all-terrain hunting vehicle.
He used it a few times this last winter, and showed the invention off at a pheasant hunt today at the Range Hunting Preserve near Westhope.
And Tom says he hopes he's not the only person who will ultimately benefit from his creation...
(Tom Martell, Bismarck) "Speaking from experience - being a lower leg amputee - how I felt when I was out with this thing, I want other people to feel that. It gave me back something I had lost. And you never know how much you appreciate it until it's gone. I used to laugh at that saying - not anymore."
Tom says he plans to convert 10 or 15 wheelchairs and eventually have them available for anyone to rent.
He's also working on converting a wheelchair into a four-wheel drive vehicle.
