A drop in students from Ward County caused an overall decline in enrollment at Minot State University this spring semester. MSU reported today a 7% enrollment drop from a year ago. That's a loss of 166 students.
And officials say it's largely due to the 2011 flood that wiped out housing located just across the street from the university and uprooted thousands of local families. MSU's vice president for academic affairs says while the number of Ward County students dropped, the numbers from some other counties were stronger - and there were more students from South Dakota, Montana, and Canada. Dr. Lenore Koczon- says housing questions seem to be key to the enrollment drop.
(Dr. Lenore Koczon, MSU VP for Academic Affairs) "The housing turmoil in the town is still impacting us. Not all students live on campus, some are married, some have families, they've been more impacted than our traditional freshmen students. Those numbers remain strong for us, they remain strong going into this semester and they look good for next fall right now."
Dakota College at Bottineau also dropped this spring compared with a year ago. DCB reports a 10% drop from spring 2011 to spring 2012. Enrollment at Williston State College showed a slight increase for spring semester. Williston State's student numbers grew by about 3% from a year ago.
