MSU Likely to Return to City for Funding

Posted: Updated:

A week ago, Minot State University officials announced the school would not seek six million dollars in funding from a special city of Minot fund to complete work on renovations at Herb Parker Stadium and the Dome.
The school had asked for the funding from city sales tax collections -- but reversed course after some people raised concerns about the timing of the request -- coming soon after the flood disaster of last summer.
So what happens now?

Herb Parker Stadium sits unfinished without a press box and other areas needed to complete the project...and the MSU Dome project is now on hold as well.
President Dr. David Fuller says the university understands the issues, but has very few options for funding the rest of the work.

(Dr. David Fuller - Minot State University President) "The state does not support athletic facilities.  And while there are people out there who say we should go to the state, the state has made it clear it does not fund athletic facilities.  One person said why don't you get it from your alums?  A fundraising effort in seeking that amount of money from alums, we just couldn't get to that level.  And I'm still back to thinking that this is a legitimate source and a legitimate project that we are going to bring back, but after we get a sense that the community is getting back in order, we have to be sensitive to that."

In addition to the six million dollars MSU had requested from the city - the university is raising about 6-point-2 million dollars on its own.
The Wellness Center just west of Minot State University isn't affected by this issue.
It is being funded by the students at Minot State to the tune of 12.7 million dollars and is slated for completion this April.
