Power Outage

Power Outage

Posted: Updated:

In the dark on a rainy day.
That's how 1,384 Xcel Energy customers spent a few hours this afternoon.

A power outage in south Minot was caused by a stressed circuit breaker at the intersection of south Main Street and 19th Ave.
Minot Fire and Police Department were on scene with Xcel Energy crews around 2:30 this afternoon.
Smoldering from the hot circuit breaker caused the top of the power pole to snap.
The power outage affected Mid Continent Cable and a number of traffic lights including south Broadway.
Some businesses had to put business on hold.

(Angie Bertsch, Hardees Employee) "We were just handing out orders and the power started flickering and people started screaming."

Power was restored for most customers by 4:00.
A handful of Xcel customers in the area of south Main Street were told by officials to expect power to be restored closer to 10 p.m.
That area included KMart, where they had no choice but to close for the afternoon.

(Dave Bussard, KMart Chief Operations Manager) "They're going through a lot right now so hats off to them and their job because the pressure is on for them and the officers and firemen are securing the area and keeping things safe over there. We appreciate their efforts. As soon as they get it fixed and get us back up and going we'll be back in business."

Xcel Energy crews had replacement pole on scene by 5:00.
One Xcel Energy crew member says the rain may have played a role in the short, and Minot Fire Department reports that the rain may also have prevented a larger flame.
