Many flooded residents of the region didn't know what to expect as the water was bearing down on their homes a year ago... How high will the water get? How soon will I get back home? Will I have a home to return to? Many of those questions have of course been answered...but some haven't -- for example...when will I get back to living in my home?
Perry Olson talked this week with one man who is still working to return to the only home he's ever owned.
The Minot Air Force Base has delivered many service men and women to the Magic City...and some...like Doug Hollingsorth and his family, loved the town so much...it became home -- even after leaving the military...the decision was easy...this was where his kids wanted to be...
(Doug Hollingsworth - Flooded Minot Resident) "I spent 24 years in the air force...our first house...we grew attached to the community and this area. We are ready to come back.
This Pennsylvania native watched his home go under like thousands did one year ago...losing it for what will be more than a year...and some prized possessions with it...
(Doug Hollingsworth - Flooded Minot Resident) "The flag that I got in my retirement...also some military documents that I had got wet...but...it was too late and I couldn't access the house. They are material things and whether or not they get replaced really doesn't matter. The biggest thing to me is I have my family and everyone was safe."
As you see though, the rebuild is in full swing. Being close to the river, there was first a wait to make sure the home wouldn't be taken by the city...but now that cloud has lifted...the work has begun...much by himself!
(Doug Hollingsworth - Flooded Minot Resident) "You don't learn all this stuff in shop class! I kid around and say I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night..."
Friends, family, and Do-It-Yourself TV shows have helped as well...but now it is almost time for the pros...
(Doug Hollingsworth - Flooded Minot Resident) "Electrician is lined up...just have to wait for final framing then HVAC plumber and drywall..."
It has been a much longer wait than he anticipated when he left before the flood...but he feels a corner has been turned, and the end is in sight...
(Doug Hollingsworth - Flooded Minot Resident) "I think the light is getting bigger and brighter...we are looking forward to getting into the house."
A dream-home, rebuilt, in the town he loves...In Minot, Perry Olson, KX News.
