We start with some breaking news tonight out of Fort Worth Texas....

A Bismarck man is shot and killed this morning by Fort Worth police.

Officers shot 34-year-old Derek Ternes outside a Fort Worth hotel around 4am this morning.

According to Sgt. Pedro Criado, a father was staying at Trinity Hotel with his 13-year-old and 11-year-old children. The father left their room to confront a suspect outside--who turned out to be Ternes.

The hotel manager then heard gunshots and called 911. Police quickly arrived to find the Ternes walking away from the scene. When police tried to talk to him, he fired shots. Police returned fire, striking Ternes number of times.

Ternes was pronounced dead at the scene. The 34-year-old father was taken to a Fort Worth hospital in critical condition. No police officers were injured during this incident. Authorities do not believe that the kids witnessed the confrontation.
