Year Ago: I Want To Go Back Home

Posted: Updated:

One year ago today, we met an unforgettable girl.
We were busy reporting on the record flood of 2011 - the Mouse River was in its 10th day over the previous all-time high set in 1881.

And then we met this little girl, living in a tent with her family after evacuating her home.

(Shawna Neuhalfen/Evacuee) "I wanna go back home."

Back on July 3rd, 2011, that's how thousands of people were no-doubt feeling.
Many were wondering when they'd get to start moving back home - and worried about what they'd find when they got there.
One year ago today, the new state flood recovery coordinator promised officials would do their best.

(Maj.Gen. Murray Sagsveen, ND Flood Recovery Coordinator) "We're trying to plan out the steps so that there are no delays and no hangups.  One issue for example is to make sure we have enough safety and other inspectors available in the county and the city so there are no delays in that process."

That was one year ago today - and, at that time, we were very close to a milestone in the flood.
We'll have that for you tomorrow.
