Motocross Family Revs Up the Engines in Mandan

Posted: Updated:
Bismarck, ND -

Motocross is hot, dirty and demanding.
And while it's not the most popular sport, it's certainly got a growing, loyal fan base.
Zach Hanley has more with a Mandan family who's lives revolve around their motorcycles, and the dirt course which has won them more trophies than they can count.

"Number 528 Ryan Peters."

(Ryan Peters) "Tough."

 "Ryan is 16 years old"

(Jim Peters / Involved With Motocross for 40 Years) "It's not easy."

 "Ryan Peters in second."

(Tom Peters / 19 Time ND Motocross Champion)  "Motocross is riding a motocross bike up and over hills, over jumps, around corners trying to do it as fast as you can"

 "Ryan Peters 22 points."

(Zach Hanely / KX Sports) "Jim and Tom Peters have heard it before."

(Jim Peters / Involved With Motocross for 40 Years) "I've had people say well that's easy, you just sit down and turn the throttle and I always say come and ride my bike."

(Zach Hanley / KX Sports) "And then you'll find out that motocross is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world."

(Jim Peters / Involved With Motocross for 40 Years) "You are using cardiovascular all the time, you're using strength, a lot of balance, a little finesse, a lot of coordination."

(Tom Peters / 19 Time ND Motocross Champion)" The bike is going up and down. It's like you are doing a lot of push-ups, many push-ups. You are using every muscle in your body."

(Jim Peters / Involved With Motocross for 40 Years) "It's not an extreme sport like some people put it in that category, it's just a great sport that not many people know about."

(Zach Hanley / KX Sports) "So the brothers spread the word to their family."

(Ryan Peters / 9 Time ND Motocross Champion) "My dad raced when he was younger and then was I was little he took me on rides around the house with his bike. And then I kind of got into it."

(Zach Hanley / KX Sports) "For the Peters, Motocross is a family tradition. Tom has 19 North Dakota Motocross Championships and so far his sons have combined for over just under that mark. But they all couldn't do any of that with out the glue that holds them and their bikes together."

(Jim Peters / Involved With Motocross for 40 Years) "Mechanic. Just keep things rolling, making sure we have a few extra parts, try to encourage them as much as I can, keep them up beat as much as I can even when they've had down days."

(Tom Peters / 19 Time ND Motocross Champion) "I've been very fortunate to have a brother that is so dedicated to my racing all the years and Ryan and Dan's racing. It's just very rewarding and gratifying to be able to work so closely with my brother."

(Zach Hanley / KX Sports) "And Motocross for the Peter's is about keeping an eye on each other."

(Tom Peters / 19 Time ND Motocross Champion) "I catch my self trying to see where he's at. It is fun racing with him and it's fun then watching when he's a head of me, but I can only watch him for so long because within probably five or six corners, you know, I can't see him, he's long gone."

(Zach Hanley / KX Sports) "In Mandan, Zach Hanley KX Sports.

The Peter's have a track in their back yard, where most of the video for this story was shot.
They train there, as well as holding occasional races as well.
