From renovating the old to building new, the New Salem community is working to beautify their town.
The City recently approved a Renaissance Zone.
The zone provides opportunity's to residents that reside, own or operate a business in the designated blocks.
The Renaissance Zone Program incorporates tax incentives to business and residential properties.
In New Salem the Zone includes Main Street, as well as two blocks north and 2 blocks south of Main.
(Shian Wessels / City Auditor) "We have gotten one project of new construction and we have one person who is building a saloon inside an old restaurant. So what we are seeing is people are finding that the Renaissance zone gives them an opportunity to save some money when they refurbish an old building and actually put some money back into the community."
The Bismarck-Mandan Development Association is providing technical support and is developing an educational packet to help residents understand and prepare their town for the infrastructure needs of oil boom.
