Cattle Shot and Left for Dead North of Mandan

Posted:

Two ranchers lose nine head of cattle in Oliver County--some shot between the eyes.

Four cows, four calves and one yearling were shot and left to die west of Highway 25 on the 4th of July.

We warn you that some of these images you are about to see are disturbing.

Oliver County Sheriff David Hillard says the incident happened between 5 a.m. and noon.

He says the motive remains unknown, but right now it is believed to be a random act.

One owner we spoke with says most of the cattle were shot in the head, between the eyes, while some even still had grass in their mouths.

"Very, very uncommon. We've never had anything like this since I've been sheriff. We were notified of it on the 5th of July. We came out and started our investigation of it."

The Oliver County Sheriff's Department is working with the ND Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Stockmen's Association in their investigation.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the killing.

If you have any information please contact the Oliver County Sheriff's Department or Stockmen's Association.
