Ramstad Ready for Demolition

Posted: Updated:

The demolition of Ramstad Middle School is underway and demolition will include the gymnasium that was only one year old before the flood.

Early Minot Public School plans suggested moving the prefabricated structure to Jim Hill, where it could be reassembled in the same way it was on Ramstad's campus.
To do that, the gym would have had to have been purchased from FEMA, and that amount would have been subtracted from the north hill Ramstad site.
Superintend ant Mark Vollmer says that with no guarantees that the disassembled building would make the trip across town, the board has decided to demolish the Ramstad gym with the school.
Asbestos was discovered in the tunnels of Ramstad, which has slowed the process of demolition, as well as increased the cost.
The demolition of Ramstad will cost nearly $673,000, which includes the new asbestos abatement costs.
Lincoln Elementary which was about one-fifth the size and had already been cleared of asbestos cost $88,000 to demolish.
Both projects are managed by Veit Construction of Minneapolis.
