Checking In At Trailheads

Posted:

While we wait to find out exactly what caused the death of 48-year-old Dan Olszewski, one thing that he did, helped with the search.

There are boxes at every trail head in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and because he signed in at one of them, it narrowed down the area where crews searched.

"We ask people to sign in, it gives us a little bit of an idea of trail usage and it can help in a search like this if we find a trail register that somebody has signed in, we know that they've been there," Eileen Andes of Theodore Roosevelt National Park said.

It's not required that hikers check in, but it does help in emergency situations.
