What would the North Dakota State Fair be without food?
Well, healthier maybe...but certainly not as enjoyable!
This year you have plenty of new options when it comes to greasy goodness and Perry Olson takes us on a tour.
He was a judge this morning for something called, Food Frenzy -- finding the best of the new.
I came with an empty stomach...and extra room in my pants for the calories that I would be consuming Friday morning...a tour of the new food at the fair...and it started here -- at The Wife's Kitchen...
"Deep Fried Brownies...this will win right? It is going to take first place!"
While these were indeed great...both tasting and looking by the way...they didn't take home the blue ribbon. In all, nine new food options were on my plate...including this --
(Matt Cranston) "These are the sausage smackers...so these will have four different flavors that everyone here will be able to use. They are basically done..."
And also worth checking out -- in fact they finished in the top half...Matt also has the Sweet potato puffs as well...right next to the grandstand is where you'll find these options. Basically everywhere you walk this year at the fair, you'll find something new to eat...
(Perry Olson) "Take this for example, the Italian Stallion from M&S Concessions. I will recommend it but I will do that for pretty much everything I try today..."
(Mark Rylander) "It is great...I have tried it."
Mark Rylander is making it...and making sneaking a bite or two as well...it gets both our endorsements...and took second place in this new food contest by the way.
We move back outside from the grandstand to the food court...here you'll find the Red Velvet Funnel Cake. Cupcakes were the inspiration for this new selection...
(Jim Thomson) "I just thought it would be interesting to take something like that and incorporate it into a funnel cake..."
And Jim as done so with success...and the glaze topping really finishes this dish off by the way. Next door -- something that intrigued me a bit...deep fried Kool-Aid!
(Guy Johnson) "We mix the kool-aid mix with the batter and deep fry it. I like it is delicious!"
We'll let Freddy judge this one...and...yep -- it gets paws up from him...I think that is a paw at least. Keep walking and you'll find the Philly Corn dog from Straights Concessions. A corn dog that collided with the city of Philadelphia maybe...the crunchy onions and peppers should have this a favorite this year. How about this? Co-Co Chicken dipped in chocolate on a stick! From Chinese Food Express
(Tony Wong) "Going to sell a bunch of them...yes...I think we will. That would be awesome."
This is certainly a unique taste you'll be hard pressed to find anything like it out at the fair, but certainly worth a try!
We closed with what ended up being the champion -- Poutine -- french fries, cheese curds, and gravy...smothered together. I mean how can you go wrong with that...the blue ribbon winner this year. Give it a try...and everything really at the 2012 State Fair where I, Perry Olson, am looking for some Tums...
