NDSU and UND have been using some student fees ... in ways that do not directly benefit the students who pay them.
That 's the finding of North Dakota
Audit Manager Gordy Smith.
He presented his report today to the State Audit and Fiscal Review Committee..
He says NDSU used more than twenty thousand dollars of student fees from the architecture program to pay off a separation agreement with a faculty member.
UND... spent more than sixteen thousand dollars to cover 12 Norwegian law exchange scholarships.
Administrators at both schools say they understand the root of the problem.
(Dr. Robert Kelley/President of UND) "UND will continue to act as a good steward of the public trust the University is working and will continue to work with the state auditors office to resolve outstanding issues and concerns outlined in this report."
This fall NDSU will begin the Student Success Tuition Model.
It encourages students to take 15 credits to help graduate in four years.
President Bresciani says the school will also clarify program and course fees.
(Dr. Bresciani/President of NDSU"Both the state board of Higher Education and our state auditors in their report, have recognized and applauded this initiative. Our hope is that it will prove a helpful model for other system schools. We understand that several out of state institutions are studying it as well."
The Board of higher Education will look at the auditor's findings and address the issues.
