Congressman Rick Berg wants to put an end to the death tax.
Berg says the federal estate tax that is imposed when property is transferred at death is unfair because it doubles taxation on income.
Berg says if nothing is done before January 1st the estate tax increase would result in everything over 1 million dollars being taxed 55%.
Berg believes that the death tax should be eliminated permanently.
He says you can't be for the family farm or small business and the death tax.
(Terry Weckerly / Hurdsfield Farmer) "We lived through the depression. We lived through the misery of the 80s. I remember paying 18% interest going through the 80s. It's just incredible to think that we would have to sell a portion of that farm and take away from the next generation."
Berg says according to Obama's proposal the average family farm would pay more than 300-thousand dollars in taxes.
