When the Mouse River inundated the valley, a couple of key buildings at the state fairgrounds were saved by a large levee.
But there were times that fair officials worried they'd lose the battle to save the grandstand and state fair center. On Saturday night in particular, the water was washing away the levee protecting the state fair center, and the National Guard helped out with one ton sandbags. At the same time, someone had to get into the flood water to save the huge facility.
Schmidt was given the Summer of Hope Hero award by the Long Term Recovery Committee this afternoon at the fairgrounds.
