A Bismarck man is sentenced to life in prison for gunning down Bismarck Police Sergeant Steve Kenner last year.
Steven Bannister's sentencing hearing was held this afternoon in Bismarck.
Bannister shot and killed Sgt. Steve Kenner July 8th 2011 while Kenner was responding to a domestic disturbance call.
Bannister was the suspect.
Kenner died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
Judge David Reich says while Bannister doesn't have a lengthy criminal record, he has a history of showing disrespect to law enforcement.
Judge Reich says Bannister made the choice to shoot at an officer and the senseless act has taken away a husband, a father, and a top notch cop.
Judge David Reich, South Central District: "No sentence I can impose can restore the loss that has been suffered by the surviving victims in this tragedy. But I can impose the maximum sentence that I am entitled to by law and the sentence I think is appropriate in this case and circumstances. I'm going to sentence you Mr. Bannister to life imprisonment without parole.">>
Bannister's attorney, Steven Mottinger, asked the court for a lesser sentence of 25 years.
Mottinger says 53 year old Bannister is in very poor health.
