Pooches and Their Owners Work For Best In Show

Posted: Updated:

From Best in Flow to Best in show The VFW arena has been over run by man's best friend.
Macy Egeland followed around some four legged friends to see what goes into the Bismarck Kennel Club Dog Show.

Fur is flying inside the VFW Sports Arena this weekend as hundreds of dogs and their owners come together to compete.
The Bismarck Kennel Club Dog show has about 220 dogs from all over the nation strutting their stuff trying to win numerous categories including Best in Show.
For the show you actually want a dog that's very outgoing and kind of a ham just because they're the ones they think they're wonderful and it really comes through and so if that dog is structurally sound and that also has that kind of a personality they're going to win and win quickly.
Nancy Lane helped start the dog show 5 years ago.
She says she has more than a dozen dogs and makes the trip all the way from Glendive, Montana every year to compete with them.
With the amount of time and work that she puts in with the dogs.. she rarely comes home empty handed.
I probably have 25 champion dogs and I have junior hunter titles and I have obedience titles. I've put lots of titles on my dogs.
Other contestants also travel a number of hours to compete... Some say they haul their pooches as long as 10 to 12 hours on the road.
That time allows handlers and owners to get closer to man's best friend.
It's kind of like dating. You have to get to know them. They have to like you because you know if they like you they're going to perform better. You can't just go and demand stuff from them. You got to have a relationship with them.
Carlson has also received many titles with many different dogs including at the Westminster Dog Show.. The biggest in the nation.
I worked for a couple different handlers. I was fortunate enough to work with some very good handlers. Elliot Weiss? ken murry? Clay Cody? and the last one I worked for, Clay, showed for Mr. Cosby so I actually won the terrier group at Westminster several years ago on a dog that was owned by Bill Cosby.
It's no secret that everyone involved has a love for dogs.. but another thing takes a close second..
What's your favorite part about competing?  Winning.

The Best of Show title will be awarded tomorrow after all of the dogs get the chance to show off.
