Candisc Bike Tour

Posted: Updated:

A little under three hundred bicyclers from 25 different states and 3 Canadian Provinces are riding around North Dakota --and there not headed to Sturgis.
Reporter Arielle Johnson brings us to New Salem to catch up with some of the riders.

(Bob Sturm/ Rider)"The Candisc ride has been an activity that has showed off North Dakota to people all around the country."
And this year, Bob Sturm is seeing a new part of North Dakota's countryside...
400 miles that starts and ends in Garrison but winds it's way to Mandan, Flasher, Regent and up the Enchanted Highway.
(Bob Sturm/Rider)"I love ND and the people and the you know being from St. Paul Minnesota, Big twin city metropolitan area it's nice to meet all the people in the small town North Dakota area, I mean the people here are the salt of the land in my opinion and it's been great."
So great, he's booked his trip for the next year's Candisc tour.
However, in his seven years, Sturm says he's noticed a change in the traffic.
(Bob Sturm/Rider)"It's a mixed blessing, more traffic on the roads so not so good for biking but nice to see the economical growth."
Bob Bjorgan has seen the growth -- not only from his bike -- but during his everyday life.
Routes through what's now "oil country" were some of his favorite, and he's been doing this event for 16 years...
(Bob Bjorgan/Rider)"Glad I went on them 20 years I did ride and got to experience them but yeah it makes it places in North Dakota where you always felt free to ride, it isn't as safe to ride them anymore so you stay away."
And Bjorgan says if you can't join them for the entire 7 day 400 mile trip -- come for one day...
(Bob Bjorgan/Rider) "It isn't a competition or a race it's just enjoyment of riding cycle and if you ever though of doing it a day you can sign up for a day or sign up for a week, its just a joy of bicycling "

Every town has put on entertainment for the riders, some even consist of putting on their high-school spring plays.
Sturm and Bjorgan both say the tour is a good social gathering mixed with good exercise, good food, and good entertainment.

Some history is worth repeating -- not so, when it comes to 2011 and historic water. In recent memory, the Mighty Missouri has raged -- in 2009, and again, in 2011.  Both times, she unleashed her fury
