North Dakota Highway Patrol and the Williams County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of possible gunfire on Highway 1804 today east of Williston.
It started with a window shattering on a truck being driven on the highway around seven this morning.
That was reported to Williams County deputies who investigated -- and discovered nothing out of the ordinary.
The story took on a life of its own in the region following internal company emails at Hess and RTC, asking employees to stay off the highway for their safety.
Soon Williams County Sheriff Scott Busching says his office was fielding calls from concerned residents that a sniper was firing on cars on 1804.
Busching says the situation is a good example of how rumors spread quickly in oil country these days, and how everyone needs to just, quote, "settle down".
Just to reiterate -- there were no gunshots, and the highway is safe to drive.
