Attorneys say this man was staying in the motel he is accused of setting on fire.
Bond has been set at $1 million cash for a man accused of setting the Lone Steer Motel on fire.
50 year old Allen Thomas of Texas appeared in court through Interactive Television this afternoon for his bond hearing. Thomas has been charged with Class B Felony Arson for setting the fire that burned the motel to the ground Sunday morning.
Judge Sonna Anderson says $1 million is appropriate because of the seriousness of the crime and Thomas' lack of connection to North Dakota. Thomas' attorney says Thomas has been in the state for a few months working on road construction projects in the Bismarck area. Thomas was staying at the motel at the time of the fire.
Kidder County State's Attorney, Erick Hetland, says Thomas is a risk to the victims, the community -- plus Thomas has a past of eluding the law...
Kidder Co. State's Attorney Eric Hetland says, "I believe it's almost half of the triple I includes issues like failure to appear, and fugitive from justice. I believe there were six entries along those lines. Given that set of circumstances, we strongly believe, if he's given the chance to bond out, we may never see him again."
Thomas is being held in the McLean County jail in Washburn. Arson is a class B Felony, which carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison.
