Summer is coming to a close...and that means some friendly faces at an area retirement home will be saying goodbye.
Throughout the summer, a group of middle school and high school students have been helping out at Edgewood Vista.
As Perry Olson shows us, they have been doing good work...and enjoying it too!
Sydney Summers and Harriet Jorgenson have developed a close relationship...quickly too...Sydney is one of a group of teens who have volunteered here at Edgewood Vista all summer long...for Sydney -- it is reading to Harriet...who cannot see.
(Harriet Jorgenson - Edgewood Vista Resident) "She is just a sweet little gal. She pops in on Tuesdays and reads til she gets tired and that is it!" (Sydney Summers - Volunteer) "I like reading in general so just...reading to people."
Sydney, Zave, and Maddie along with another friend have spent plenty of time here the last few months...keeping things nice and clean and green...
(Maddie Kranz - Volunteer) "Watering the flowers and weeding the gardens..." (Zave Navarro - Volunteer) "I have been working with the maintenance guys...working on jobs inside the apartments and mowing outside. Weeding, watering, doing whatever they tell me."
...and helping to lift the spirits of residents too...
(Don Beckman - Edgewood Vista) "It is great to have volunteers come in...fresh faces, and the residents really love the young people when they come by to visit...it is a great asset for us."
And while they have certainly helped to make Edgewood look better...they have certainly learned a lesson in citizenship as well...
(Zave Navarro - Volunteer) "Didn't want to just sit around all summer at home so I decided I would do something good for the community."
And made quite the impression on folks like Harriet here...
(Harriet Jorgenson - Edgewood Vista Resident) "I think she could...I think she could do most anything she decided to do."
