Getting oil out of the ground more efficiently is a major goal. Senator Conrad is in Dickinson today to talk about enhanced oil recovery--which is said to get more oil out of the ground and be environmentally friendly.
It is a process where CO2 is pumped into the ground and pushes oil into the processing pipe. This allows an increase in oil pulled from the ground from 20 percent to 80 percent. Conrad says it's also considered better for the environment by getting that C-O-2 out of the air. Senator Conrad is a supporter of the process already being used in Canada.
Kent Conrad "We need incentives for this to occur and so I've introduced legislation along with Senator Rockefeller, Senator Enzi of Wyoming and we have been assured by the chairman of the Finance committee by the end of this year that this legislation will move forward. So we're very excited about the opportunity."
The U.S. currently pays one billion dollars a day abroad for oil. Brad Crabtree of Great Plains Institute says that over 40 years--this recovery process could generate 100 billion dollars in revenue.
