Mental Health Important for College Students

Posted: Updated:

Transitioning from High School to college can be a challenge for students.
Jon Schaeffer has tells you how students mental health can be effected by the change and how to handle it.

Moving to away for school can be a challenging process in a young adult's life.
(Zane Irvine/University of Mary Freshman) " It's different cuz you know its same friends aren't around family is not around but I mean it's not.. you get used to it I mean it's been a week and I'm kind of used to the grind already guess."
For many student's it is the first time away from home--
Zane"The freedom you know you eat when you want you do your homework when you want. it's nice."
but in some cases it can result in problems.
( Trina Black/ University of Mary Student Counselor)"Students are going through a time of change and adjustment and it's an exciting time but there also is a great deal of stress with change and so it's really important for them to reach out to their supports."
according to an article on livescience.com--depression has become more common over the last decade among college students.
Trina says Supports such as family and friends are the best way to help adjust-- and technology is helping students keep in touch with them.
Trina "Stay in touch with your supports back home in terms of skyping cell phone those kinds of things. we encourage that but they do have to adjust and find some alternatives supports here."
Along with those external supports-- there are things students can do internally to help themselves.
Trina "To maintain their mental health, they have to get good rest good nutrition and have a balanced life."
In one of the most transitional times of a young adults life- to keep strong mental health use your support and make the most of what college has to offer.
I'm Jon Schaeffer with KXNEWS.

While the article on livescience does say depression is up--it also says that high anxiety is on the decline.
