North Dakota blazes new trails in the coal industry.
Minnkota's Young Station near Center, is the first lignite-fired, cyclone boiler plant in the country to use CyClean Technology.
CyClean additives are designed to improve boiler operations and reduce power plant emissions.
The technology can reduce mercury emissions by 40% and nitrogen oxide levels by 20%.
(Senator John Hoeven / ND (R)) "Here they are going above and beyond. They are continuing to provide better environmental stewardship. And you know what? When this is demonstrated and people say, oh look that works great you can produce more energy with less emissions. It will be adopted not only throughout North Dakota, not only through the United States, but globally. Ultimately, that's how you reduce emissions."
Between 2006 and 2011 Minnkota spent 425 million dollars in environmental upgrades at the Young Station.
