Today is the great American smokeout.

Kids in Bismarck Public Schools are participating.. trying to help people kick the habit.

Students plan activities to show the importance of quitting smoking.

With help from their counselor-- students at Wachter Middle School are learning the dangers of smoking and sharing what they learn with their peers, family and friends.

(Taylor Benske/ Student) "I think it's for students to know they shouldn't smoke and that there are bad side effects for when they grow older."

(Josh Kuhn/ Student) "I just thought I never really knew that much about smoking til now I just kinda got deeper into it."

The students learned today that Nine out of ten people who smoke start before the age of 18.
