More than a month after a fire burned an entire town, many displaced residents are spending the holidays away from their home.
Lucy Milliren walks on top of where her house used to stand in Bucyrus.
Last month her home along with a few others in town were burned to the ground.
"First of all we went through all the ashes, to find nothing in one piece anymore, nothing but ashes left," Lucy Milliren said.
After going through all the ashes, their home of 15 years was then filled with dirt.
"A big old tractor came and shoved all the foundation in and hauled some dirt in for us and leveled it out and the next step I'm not sure," Milliren said.
While a lot of the homes are gone in the town one piece of property wasn't touched, the mailboxes, in fact everyone's mailbox in the town of Bucyrus still stands.
"It's really strange the mailman can make the same route through town as long as people are picking up their mail, we still do, we pick our mail up right here, in our mailbox, it seems kind of strange but the mailboxes stood," Lucy Milliren said.
The Milliren's mailbox might still be here, but Lucy's Frameshop is a complete loss.
"I also had a shop here, that was my retirement I was going to do that here, I'm not anymore, yeah your heart breaks when you look at it, I love Bucyrus I loved living here, it's just about as good as the country," Milliren said.
For now the Milliren's are living with a family friend while they look for a house to call their new home in Hettinger.
"Buying a house there and I'm not sure if we'll sell this property or if we'll put something here and try to rent it out, I'm not sure what we'll do yet with this," Milliren said.
Leaving behind a home filled with dreams and memories.
