Two horses were shot and killed south of Watford City over the weekend.

The incident happened about 15 miles south of Watford City near the Long X Bridge.

The horses were laying near the river.

The owner's brother Russ Kling believes the shooting took place between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

He the horses were laying within 3 feet of each other and one mare was shot eight times while the other was shot in the back of the head.

There were also two colts nearby that were not shot.

The McKenzie County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
