He's become a celebrity in his quest to strike it rich in Gold in Alaska.

Fred Hurt, known as Dakota Fred on Discovery's Gold Rush is back home in Minot for the mining off-season and was speaking at the Kiwanis Club today.

Dakota Fred got his start on the Discovery Channel's Gold Rush two years ago.

He first appeared on the 6th episode of season one and has been apart of the show ever since.

The show is now in its third season and tracks four mining groups as they dig for "pay dirt" in Alaska.

A retired Commercial Diver, Dakota Fred got into gold mining with his son-in-law 10 years ago as a hobby.

He turned that hobby into an eventual career both in fortune seeking and television.

Despite it all, Dakota Fred says gold may shine but it's family that lasts.

(Fred Hurt, "Dakota Fred" Discovery Gold Rush) "I don't put a great emphasis on how much gold you find. What I emphasize, especially since I've been retired, is how much fun did you have doing it? And what kind of an adventure did you have doing it?"
