Ward County Sheriff Steve Kukowski says with the demographic change that is taking place across the region, it's important for people to be aware of their surroundings at all times and have a safety plan in place.
(Steve Kukowski, Ward County Sheriff) "The biggest thing to do right off the bat is if you think you're being threatened is to make a lot of noise and draw attention to yourself and someone will come to your aid. If someone was to scream in a parking lot it's going to draw everyone's attention."
Kukowksi says there is safety in numbers as well.
If you happen to see someone parked next to your vehicle that's suspicious, he says there's nothing wrong with going back into the store and asking for a security official to escort you out.
