Conceal Carry Permit

Posted: Updated:

An attempted kidnapping at the Minot Walmart Friday morning has many people thinking about safety.
Ward County Sheriff Steve Kukowski says the number of application requests for Conceal Carry Permits was extremely high before Friday's incident.

He says people should always be aware of their surroundings and keep safety in mind whether they are in a parking lot or in their own neighborhood.
He says if a person chooses to carry a taser or stun gun, they do need to have a conceal carry permit.

(Sheriff Steve Kukowski, Ward County)  "If you're going to have a stun gun or taser you do have to have a conceal carry permit weapons permit.  The other thing you have to be mentally prepared to use those things.  A lot of people buy a firearm, are you really prepared to use that and take a life?  I think it would be much to have to put into affect."

Kukowski says safety in numbers is one of the best practices for staying safe.
He also cautions people to stay alert in any unusual circumstances that could lead to trouble.

(Sheriff Steve Kukowski, Ward County) "If you walk to your car and you see that next to you is a van parked or an individual sitting in there, there's no shame in walking back into the store and being safe.  Be cautious of where you're at.  If there's someone sitting in the passenger side of the vehicle that's parked next to you be aware of that. That's also another ploy that has been used."

Kukowski says if someone does try to harm you, the first thing you should do is make a lot of noise so that everyone around knows that you're in trouble.
