Gun Sales Skyrocket In North Dakota

Posted:

Since Friday's massacre in Newtown Connecticut, gun stores across the nation have been busy with customers.

Today we went to two stores, to find out why so many people are "loading up," in gun stores.

"In the last three days it's been busy," Brandon Charvat said.

Busy is an understatement, for the traffic Mandan Sporting Goods has seen the past few days.

One of the most popular guns being sold, is the AR-15, a weapon believed to be used in the Newtown shooting.

"And the problem is, I just had a vendor come in here and I won't be able to get them anymore either, it's going to be tough to get them at this point in time if you don't already have them on hand," Charvat said. "Just cause they're in demand by everybody?" "Absolutely."

In demand because many people are afraid they soon might not be able to get their hands on one.

"I think the fear is there that they think they are going to try and ban something," Charvat said.

The story is no different at Andrus Outdoors in Dickinson, where they've completely sold out of the AR-15.

"On Friday and Saturday we went through more than 40 of them and if I could've had another 100 I could've sold them," Greg Knutson said.

Currently the AR-15 is legal in North Dakota, and is used by many hunters.

"I don't think we have a lot that are doing it for protection, most people that are buying those guns, I mean generally my cliental base has got a hunting background, coyote hunting, deer hunting, prairie dog hunting whatever," Charvat said.

Obama has talked about making stricter laws when it comes to guns in the country, however nothing has been decided yet.

Officials say some areas on the road near Jamestown were 10 to 14 inches deep. It may be hard to tell but this is actually interstate. Drivers were down to about five miles an hour just west of Jamestown
Two westbound semi trailers were swept off the road and had to be pulled out early Sunday, and some eastbound vehicles were stranded until the water receded enough to let them proceed.
