Oil Well Blowout Contained Near Watford City

Posted: Updated:

An oil well blowout that's been spraying since Friday has been contained.

A spokesman for Newfield Exploration Company says they have plugged the well, which was spewing a gas, oil and water mixture.

Responders have been working since Friday evening to contain the oil well five miles west of Watford City.

According to Keith Schmidt, the senior communications coordinator with Newfield, they activated an emergency response plan at around eight o'clock Friday evening.

Schmidt says there were no injuries and the surrounding area was secured.

He says it is too early to know how much gas has been released, but a Wild Well Control crew has been on-site since Friday.

Schmidt says this is the first time this type of incident has occurred for Newfield in North Dakota.
