Naming Three New Bismarck Schools

Posted:

The names of the three new schools being built in Bismarck will soon be revealed.

Tonight we find out how the decision is made and talk with a man who would like to see one of the schools named after his former co-worker.

<<The location for three new schools in Bismarck has been decided, so now it's time to start thinking about names for those buildings.

"As soon as you have a name, then you can start having an identification, so for example with the new high school, we want the kids who are going to attend that high school to know the name of their high school, the color of their high school, so they can have a t-shirt, a sweatshirt, a jersey and start building their sports and fine arts programs," Superintendent Tamara Uselman said.

So when will the decision be made for the names of the three new schools? Superintendent Tamara Uselman says the decision could be made as soon as the end of January or beginning of February.

"We think naming these schools is hugely significant, so we're eager to get that going, we have a number of suggestions for every school already," Uselman said.

One suggestion is to name one of the schools after Sergeant Steve Kenner, who was killed in the line of duty on July 8th 2011.

"Personally he was very involved with Northridge Elementary, so I think the elementary school would fit pretty decent, he was big into kids, whenever he got to a call and there were kids there, he was talking to them, he loved kids," Detective Dustin Miller said.

Detective Miller says not only was Sergeant Kenner a good guy to work with, he also was a great man outside of work.

"Yeah he was an employee for the Police Department, but he was also a citizen, and he was a great one, whether it's what he did as a Police Officer, or what he did on his off time," Miller said.

A man Miller says deserves to be remembered, because not only did he love kids, he also spent his career protecting them.>>

You still have time to put in your suggestion for names of the new schools.

To put in your suggestion, just log onto the School District website and you'll find a link to vote for names of all three new schools.

The deadline is January 15th.
