Parole Hearing For Shawn Novotny

Posted:

A man who shot his girlfriend in Dickinson in 1994 meets in front of the parole board today.

Shawn Novotny was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with five years suspended for the murder of Amy Dennis.

Novotny and Dennis dated for a number of years and Novotny says Dennis gave him a suicide note and wanted him to shoot her.

After shooting Dennis, Novotny then turned the gun on himself, but survived.

After spending nearly 19 years behind bars today Novotny is up for parole.

"I've thought about everything I've done, and I do take responsibility it is my fault for what happened, like you said I should've went and got help but I didn't I don't know why I did it," Shawn Novotny said.

Novotny's parole request was denied.

With good behavior, his sentence will be up on July 30, 2015.

June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness month. The disorder affects thousands of combat veterans every year, many of whom never seek out help. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs,
The Veterans Affairs Clinic in Fargo has been working on their outreach across the state, they want more soldiers to get screened, but can't force it either.
