County voters approved it -- now its time to design and build it.
A multi-million dollar expansion to the Ward County jail is a part of the building project that will be constructed for the county.
Tuesday, officials with the Ward County Sheriff's Department met with architects from the Twin Cities who are in charge of designing the addition to the jail.
It's an addition that is sorely needed.
This past weekend more than 30 people were processed through the jail -- pushing the capacity beyond what it is designed for.
This addition, when complete will add 84 more beds.
With the current growth of the region, Sheriff Steve Kukowski says they are much needed...and needed now!
The addition does face a bit of a hurdle...real estate to build on isn't plentiful, so building up instead of out will be a big part of the project.
(Steve Kukowski - Ward County Sheriff) "We are limited to the space that we have as far as ground space and that is where the problem comes in. If we were building a new facility in a rural area we would plan differently but we are stuck to what we have."
Yesterday's meeting in Minot was the second such meeting working to finalize the plan so construction can start soon on the jail.
