Around Town

Posted: Updated:

Renovations and restarts are the themes of the day, as Barbara Sharp takes you Around Town.

From humble beginnings as a food warehouse in 1907, to a coming-soon full-service American Bank Center, the John Iverson Building in Mandan is the tale of a modern project that almost didn't get off the ground.  But today's ground-breaking ceremony signals new beginnings for the empty warehouse.  Paving the way for development was first, the 2004 contaminated soil settlement with BNSF Railway, and second, the urging of Mandan customers.

Greg Vetter, Chief Operating Officer of American Bank Center says, "our customers that we have from Mandan asked us all the time, 'please, when can you open a location in Mandan?'"  "And so today, you're sitting, you're standing in the future lobby of American Bank Center."

This might just be the best-kept secret in Bismarck.

Hotwire Cafe -- located inside the Bismarck Public Library -- offers coffee drinks, paninis, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, ice cream and more.  Take-out is available, and the Cafe provides catering services for meetings hosted at the library.

Rachael Neva, Owner of Hotwire Cafe says, "we feel like we have a really neat experience being here in the public library.  A lot of people enjoy coming in and grabbing a coffee and then they can go check out the Internet or read a book, check-out books.  We also have a lot of Story Time Moms."

The Bismarck Motor Motel is getting more than a face-lift.  A fixture since 1933, the Motel is being razed to make way for a brand-new, upgraded operation with over three-times more rooms.  The new motel will feature, among other things, larger rooms and garages.

"We're going to have -- probably a third of the rooms are going to be totally handicap-accessible," say owners Dan & Cherie Frank.  "They all will have big enough, 36 inch doors. . . .  Some will have hot tubs."

A portion of the new foundation has already been poured.  They expect to be up and running this May with full completion of new construction by the Fall.

On a busy Friday, this is Barbara Sharp taking you Around Town.
