Daycare Challenges In North Dakota

Posted:

If you're a parent you know how difficult it can be to find daycare for your child.

But parents aren't the only ones struggling, childcare facilities are having a hard time finding employees.

With so many jobs available in the state, minimum wage is no longer appealing to those applying for child care positions.

This afternoon daycare providers meet with lawmakers to explain the problems they're facing.

"This is due to the fact that our base salary for many of the businesses in our community have gone to 13 or 14 dollars entry level, and we can just cannot pay that to our staff," Karla Ross, Director of Little Hands Loving Hearts in Minot said.

"For about every child we have in the classroom, we have a child who is on the waiting list, who is not being served by our program, Barry Nelson, Director of Birth to Five Head Start in Fargo said."

Some daycare centers in oil and gas producing counties, could close within months if they don't receive assistance.
